Granite Repair 101

When breakage in a granite or stone surface occurs, a gap or crack opens up as a result of the damage to the stone. If not repaired, the damage will eventually continue to increase in size with temperature changes and erosion due to moisture. Granite chip repair provides the complete evacuation of the air and moisture in the chip, along with the complete fill of material(s). As a net result, granite chip repair will restore the strength to the granite or stone, restore visual impression and prevent the break from continuing to spread, thus eliminating the need for complete counter top or slab replacement. SDGRA recommends granite repair when the chip or crack is first noticed. If your damage is left untreated for a long period of time, granite repair may not be possible. Regardless, call on a SDGRA member shop right away to evaluate the damage and get a quote to prevent further damage or a total loss. Each type of damage has a unique look before and cosmetic look after the stone or granite has been repaired. Cosmetic results usually vary from good to excellent depending on the type of damage and the length of time it has been in the granite. The goal of granite repair is to: • Restore strength to the granite or stone • Prevent the original damage from spreading further • Retain the look and save your money • Create a smooth surface to prevent interferences If left untreated, the damage will spread and will eventually be irreparable. Cleanliness is the key to a safe granite repair. If grease, water, dirt and other debris are left in the damaged area, the granite repair materials will not bond securely to the porous stone - leaving gaps, bubbles, and imperfections in the bond. This type of improper repair will not effectively stop the spread of damage and will most likely result in a larger chip or crack over time. CLICK HERE FOR A LIST OF SDGRA MEMBER COMPANIES
